The Marble Church

The Marble Church

• 3 minutes reading time

Frederick’s Church is the name of this church that stands out among its “co-churches” in Copenhagen with its huge copper dome and Italian style. The vast majority knows the church as Marmorkirken, the church of marble, a byname that it acquired at an early age when King Frederick V was still planning to have the walls made in solid marble – though this plan never materialised. This wasn’t the only thing that didn’t come to fruition in the long history of the church’s formation. In fact, King Frederick V laid the foundation stone in 1749, but it wasn’t until 1894 that the church was finally inaugurated.

145 Long Years

Frederick V’s church was intended to be the ultimate splendour in the brand-new neighbourhood of Frederiksstaden. The architect, who played a significant role in the whole process, designed a larger and more lavishly ornamented church than the one that was eventually completed.
