Amalienborg Palace

• 3 minutes reading time

Amalienborg Palace is the winter residence of the royal family. Her Majesty the Queen has her living-quarters in the  palace in the southern corner, known as Christian IX’s Palace. If the flag is raised on this palace, it means, that someone is at home. Originally, the four similar palaces were built in the 1750s for four high-ranking noblemen. However, since 1794, they have been housing the royal family. Every day at noon, you can witness the Life Guards’ changing of the guard; a popular event for tourists in Copenhagen.

A Fire-Prone Opera House

The name comes from the summer palace Sophie Amalienborg, which stood here until 1689. It was Queen Amalie who had a fine palace and a corresponding baroque garden built here. After her death, King Christian V watched an opera in a side-building of the palace on his birthday.
