Freetown Christiania

• 3 minutes reading time

Christiania is an area located on Christianising and the old ramparts, markedly distinct from the rest of the city. It was established in 1971 as an attempt to create an alternative social organisation. However, a part of it involved the consumption of drugs, which has led to a continuous conflict with the authorities throughout its existence. To put it mildly, public opinion of Christiania is divided. Christiania operates on a consensus democracy model, which, in contrast to majoritarian democracy, requires unanimous agreement from all members. This engaging idea often results in notoriously lengthy communal meetings.
