Børsen

Børsen

• 3 minutes reading time

Børsen, the old stock exchange building, is a Renaissance building in Dutch style dating from 1620 to 1623. It was built as a commodity exchange, a marketplace where merchants could trade their goods from the 40 stalls in the large hall. Until as recently as 1974, it continued to function as a stock exchange. Christian V was the commissioner of Børsen, which took part in a greater expansion of Copenhagen. Børsen’s grandiose style and ornamental façade reflect the importance of trade to the Danish king in the first half of the 17th century. Take note of the spire with the four dragons, whose tails are twined together reaching upwards towards the sky.

When Børsen Was Sold

In 1618, Christian IV planned to expand the city with the fortress Christianshavn to the southeast. To reach the new fortress, the water areas needed to be filled in. It was on this reclaimed land that Børsen was built. One could sail all the way up to the building on both sides and unload goods.
