Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg Palace

• 3 minutes reading time

Christiansborg Palace is an immense structure situated on the island of Slotsholmen. The palace was constructed between 1907 and 1928 and has since been the home of Denmark’s parliament and the office of the prime minister. Adjacent to the palace, you will find the palace chapel from 1826, where kings and queens were baptised and married. It is also the place where the population bid farewell to them upon their passing. In the courtyard between the main palace and the chapel, you will find the Supreme Court of Denmark, with its extensively repurposed portal. Within the main palace, there is a museum, and you can access an exceptional view of the city from the tower.

The Five Palaces

Back in 1167, Absalon’s Castle was constructed on this very site, and from the 15th century onwards, it served as the royal residence. Therefore, it has always been the centre of power. In 1731, the old castle was demolished, and King Christian VI commissioned the construction of the first Christiansborg Palace.
