The Lighting Company

The Lighting Company

• 3 minutes reading time

The large, red brick building from 1910 was constructed for The Lighting Company of Copenhagen. The building is elaborate and imposing. The grand entrance is reminiscent of the symbol of Copenhagen: the three towers. Inside, you can find one of the city’s few paternoster elevators—a contraption of cabins running continuously, allowing passengers to hop on and hop off on the go. Please note the corner facing the street Lønporten: cannonballs are immured, presumably from the bombardment in 1807. Today, the building houses the Copenhagen Adult Education Centre, KVUC.

In the Extreme Outskirts of the City

Until the 1640s, Copenhagen’s eastern rampart ran along Gothersgade, making this area the outermost part of the city in that direction. The street name Landemærket, meaning ‘the landmark,’   marks the border between town and country.
