The City Hall Square, Rådhuspladsen, is one of the most significant squares in Copenhagen and, for many Copenhageners, synonymous with the heart of the city. It serves as a meeting place and a junction point for both Copenhageners and visitors. From the square, you can access the old part of the city via the pedestrian street of Strøget, while in the opposite direction, Vesterbrogade leads to the vibrant district of Vesterbro. The construction of the current City Hall was initiated in 1892 after the architect Martin Nyrop had won the contract. Copenhagen City Hall and the related square were completed in 1905.

Junction Point

If you had left the city through the western gate of the city’s ramparts, you would have ended up here on a long bridge over the moat towards the mainland. Vesterport was the gateway to the rest of Denmark and the world. Even though the gates and ramparts have now been demolished,
