Pistolstræde

Pistolstræde

• 3 minutes reading time

Pistolstræde is a passageway connecting Ny Østergade with Østergade in the shape of an uppercase L. Only the passage from Ny Østergade and the small plaza are original parts of this passageway. In fact, it is this old section of the passageway that gave it its name, as it can be seen as resembling the stock of a pistol, with the 3-metre-wide passage to Ny Østergade resembling the barrel. Pistolstræde is an idyllic place, and there isn’t much trace left of the destitution that once prevailed. The charming half-timbered and brightly coloured houses create a unique setting for the restaurants in the small atrium.

Rented Housing for the Poor

Originally, Pistolstræde was a crossroad branching off from the infamous Peder Madsens Gang, where Ny Østergade is situated today. In the 1600s, the builder Peder Madsen constructed small rented houses in this narrow alley for the city’s poorest citizens.
