Nytorv

Nytorv

• 3 minutes reading time

Nytorv (New Square) was cleared in 1606 behind the city hall. The square can hardly be called new anymore, but the name refers to the fact that it is, after all, newer than the neighbouring square, Gammeltorv (Old Square). Initially, the square was primarily used as a marketplace, just like Gammeltorv, and the city sent its butchers there with their wagons and stalls. However, the butchers were unpopular due to their messiness. Therefore, it was decided that the square should become the setting for one of the grim activities of the past – Nytorv became the city’s official scaffold. All of this took place in the shadow of the city hall.

The City Halls

Copenhagen’s current city hall is the sixth of its kind, but here, between Gammeltorv and Nytorv, the third and fourth city halls were situated. On the pavement in the north flank of the square, there is now a plaque made of brighter granite stone with the outline of a city hall.
