Københavns Byret

Københavns Byret

• 3 minutes reading time

The City Court of Copenhagen, Københavns Byret, is a neoclassical structure built in 1815. Originally, it served as both the city hall and courthouse. This was the city’s fifth city hall until the sixth and current city hall opened in 1905. The city jail and the police department were also housed in this seat of power. The most distinctive features of the building are the two Bridges of Sighs that connect the main building with the jailhouse, forming the narrow alley of Slutterigade. Today, the structure is just one part of the complete City Court but is undoubtedly the most prominent.

The Seat of Power and the Missing Adornment

With its triangular gable and enormous Ionic columns, the City Court of Copenhagen clearly features references to antiquity. Originally, the structure had three functions: as a city hall, courthouse and jail. The building’s grand and imposing size lends it an air of authority.
