Kastellet

Kastellet

• 3 minutes reading time

The citadel Kastellet is a unique pentagonal and star-shaped fortress built from 1662 to 1665 to protect Copenhagen against enemy attacks. Today, Kastellet still operates as a military zone, serving as barracks. Public access is available during the daytime, either through the main entrance, the King’s Gate on the south side, or via the Norway Gate on the north side. Kastellet was constructed in the aftermath of a violent siege of Copenhagen that lasted from 1658 to 1659 and the establishment of absolute monarchy in 1660. Both events have left their marks on this star-shaped fortress.

In February 1659, Swedish troops stormed Copenhagen. More than 500 Swedes were killed, compared to only 12 Danes. Although Copenhagen emerged victorious, the southern Swedish possessions had to be relinquished, and for this reason, Copenhagen became a bulwark against the archfiend.
