Church of the Holy Spirit

Church of the Holy Spirit

• 3 minutes reading time

Originally, the Church of the Holy Spirit was a part of the Holy Spirit Abbey located in this part of Copenhagen. The abbey was inaugurated in 1469, but after the Reformation, Catholic monasticism was closed, bringing an end to the Augustinians’ life in the Holy Spirit Abbey. The present-day church functions as a Protestant church, and the building, with its distinctive Gothic spire, is a reconstruction after it burned down in 1728. Remnants of the original exterior wall dating back to 1296 can still be seen. The House of the Holy Spirit by the church’s main entrance dates from the latter half of the 15th century.

At the Mercy of the Monks

The House of the Holy Spirit was a part of the total monastery complex but served as a hospital. The Augustinians lived on alms but – also specialized in caring for the sick. Inside the house, granite pillars and the white-washed arches inspire pictures of monks humming between the sick beds with herbs and words of God.
