Vor Frelsers Kirke

Vor Frelsers Kirke

• 3 minutes reading time

In 1696, Vor Frelsers Kirke, Our Saviour’s Church, was consecrated. Fifteen years later, the foundation stone for King Christian V’s beautiful Baroque church was laid. Its most iconic feature is the twisted spire with its exterior spiral staircase, but this was added later, in 1752. The interior of Our Saviour’s Church is lavishly decorated, with the organ from 1698 being the most impressive. The organ rests on two elephants, a reference to Denmark’s highest-ranked order of chivalry, the Order of the Elephant.

The Twisted History of the Spire

The design of the spire drew its inspiration from the Italian church Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, which, in turn, was built with inspiration from the biblical Tower of Babel. However, Our Saviour’s Church is not constructed in stone but in wood plated in copper.
