Vandkunsten

Vandkunsten

• 3 minutes reading time

The small, narrow square and street section known as Vandkunsten is a charming urban space with a long history in Copenhagen. At the centre of the square stands the current “vandkunst” (literally ‘water feature’) dating back to 1910. Within the fountain, references to the square’s historical significance can be observed. On the sturdy red-brick building at number 1, located on the corner facing Frederiksholms Kanal, you can even find one of Copenhagen’s oldest street signs. This sign is embedded in the facade of the considerably younger building from 1910, and it reads ‘Wandkonsten’.

Fish and Water Separately

The name Vandkunsten originates from the establishment of a water mill here in the mid-1500s. The water mill was further equipped with a pumping system, allowing water to be pumped up to the royal palace using hollowed-out tree trunks – pure luxury!
