University Of Copenhagen

University Of Copenhagen

• 3 minutes reading time

The university building, dating back to 1836, stands in a pure architectural style, with its seven-pointed gable facing the square of Frue Plads. Adorned with an eagle above the main entrance, Latin inscriptions and copper busts, the University’s administrative main building makes it a fitting counterpart to the adjacent cathedral. This structure was constructed in the aftermath of the destruction of the previous university building during the English bombardment of 1807. Inside the courtyard, you can find a red-brick building known as the Consistory Building, believed to be Copenhagen’s oldest structure, dating back to the 1420s. The University of Copenhagen was established in 1479.

Law and Latin

Until 1770, the university had its own jurisdiction, and during matriculation, new students were registered according to university regulations. In many ways, it resembled its own republic within the state. The University also possessed its own court, police force, and even maintained its very own prison for students who did not behave properly.
