The Royal Theatre

The Royal Theatre

• 3 minutes reading time

The Royal Theatre boasts a decorative façade that faces the square of Kongens Nytorv. It serves as Denmark’s national theatre, owned by the state. The Royal Theatre stages plays, opera, and ballet productions, which are performed across six different venues throughout the city. Here, at Kongens Nytorv, stands the grand building from 1874, which serves as the main theatre housing the exquisite Old Stage. In the past, this theatre was a training ground for ballet dancers, opera singers, and actors. While the academies have since undergone reorganization, the Ballet School remains a part of this historic institution.

Performances in Danish

Until 1772, all theatre plays in Copenhagen were performed in French or German. The majority were staged in the Royal Court Theatre located in the royal palace. However, in 1722, the Grønnegade Theatre opened with performances in Danish.
