The Grand Teatret

The Grand Teatret

• 3 minutes reading time

Grand Teatret on Mikkel Bryggersgade is a renowned cinema in Copenhagen, commonly referred to as ‘Grand’ among the locals. This cinema screens both larger and smaller films but is particularly renowned for its exclusive European repertoire. The Grand Theatre opened in 1923. Prior to that, it had already been a cinema under a different name. Originally, it was part of the expansive Palace Hotel, facing The City Hall Square, and the Grand Theatre is an extension of it. When the grand building was completed in 1910, the current premises of the Grand Theatre were intended to serve as the structure’s concert hall. However, in 1913, it was converted into a cinema, making it the oldest cinema in Copenhagen that still showcases films.

The Master Butcher

The master builder behind the hotel building, complete with its impressive concert hall, was the master butcher Anders Jensen. This gentleman hailed from a humble family with many children, and he was dispatched to work at a young age.
