Pilestræde

• 3 minutes reading time

Pilestræde, “Willow Alley,” is a charming little street winding its way through one of the livelier parts of inner Copenhagen. Pilestræde and the adjacent streets offer excellent shopping opportunities and numerous bars and cafés. Pilestræde is first mentioned in 1419, and its name originates from the numerous willow trees that once graced the area. Here, the people of Copenhagen could obtain willow for weaving baskets and fences. The street’s history includes a female minister, a highly unique bull and an almost 300-year-old newspaper.

Berlingske Tidende

In 1765, E.H. Berling relocated his company to Pilestræde. He was the publisher of the leading newspaper in Denmark. Its popularity stemmed from a combination of news and advertisements, as well as a royal privilege to present international news.
