Nyhavn

Nyhavn

• 3 minutes reading time

Nyhavn is an artificially dug-out canal dating back to 1673, leading from the harbour to the square of Kongens Nytorv. Nyhavn is highly picturesque with its colourful facades from the 18th and 19th centuries, standing side by side, along with the many boats and their masts in the foreground. Today, Nyhavn is one of the most photographed areas in Copenhagen, and its exceptional ambience attracts thousands of tourists. However, it hasn’t always been this way. Nyhavn has a shady past, and behind the coloured facades, dark memories lurk.

Nyhavn has two facets. When most people think of Nyhavn, the colourful images come to mind – images of odd house numbers, the sun and all the cafes with outdoor service. However, for many years, Nyhavn was characterised by seafaring life, featuring both tattooists and women of ill repute.
