The narrow street of Magstræde is one of Copenhagen’s most charming alleys. With its colourful buildings and picturesque cobblestone pavement, it gracefully winds its way between the alleys Knabrostræde and Rådhusstræde. Many of the street’s buildings are listed, and numbers 17 and 19 are the oldest structures on the street. These two red houses likely date back to the 1640s, making them some of the oldest residential buildings for townsfolk still standing in Copenhagen.

Living by the Sea

Until the 1500s, Magstræde abutted the shoreline, and the buildings on the south side of the street are thus situated on the man-made landfill from the 1520s that shifted the coastline to its current position.
