Kultorvet

• 3 minutes reading time

Today, Kultorvet is a bustling and busy square, bearing the marks of being the direct route from the traffic hub at Nørreport to the heart of old Copenhagen. Consequently, Kultorvet is the perfect place to sit at one of the many outdoor cafés and people-watch. You can also take a seat by the large circular fountain from 2013, which was placed there to divert the flow of pedestrians. Kultorvet was established after the great fire in 1728 and served as a trading centre for fuels, including peat and charcoal.

Poor People’s Hospital

Long before the great fire, the square didn’t exist, and the small and charming alley of Sankt Gjertruds Stræde in the northeast corner extended over the current square. For a brief period, from 1524 to 1530, the Catholic hospital, Sankt Annæ Hospital, could be found in the neighbourhood around Kultorvet.
