Kongens Nytorv

Kongens Nytorv

• 3 minutes reading time

Kongens Nytorv is one of the most prominent squares in Copenhagen. From here, you can reach the popular Nyhavn and Strøget or explore the parallel shopping streets, Store Kongensgade and Bredgade. Alternatively, you can leisurely stroll around the equestrian statue within the Krinsen, the parterre in the centre of the square. Kongens Nytorv was laid out in the 1670s by King Christian V, who is depicted by the equestrian statue. Prior to the 1670s, this location was known as “Hallandsåsen,” a Swedish ridge, due to the accumulation of garbage and rubbish in the area.

A Growth Spurt in Copenhagen

During the 1600s, Copenhagen experienced a significant growth spurt. King Christian IV planned to extend the city’s fortresses and ramparts to the north. This extension continued under the next royal successors, and during King Christian V’s reign, Kongens Nytorv became an integral part of this expansion.
