Klareboderne

• 3 minutes reading time

The street of Klareboderne, ‘the St. Clare nuns’ abodes,’ is a charming little street with intriguing architectural details, situated between the bustling Købmagergade and Pilestræde. This area was cleared in the 17th century and received its name from St. Clare’s Monastery, which disappeared when the street was constructed. Klareboderne offers a peaceful respite from Købmagergade and is home to Denmark’s oldest and most prestigious publishing house, Gyldendal. On the façade of number 1, facing Købmagergade, there is a memorial plaque for the renowned scientist Niels Steensen, who not only was a pioneer in anatomy and geology but also became a Catholic priest and bishop.

A Brief Visit of Nuns

In 1505, St. Clares´ Monastery was inaugurated in the area. It was the queen at the time who invited the order of nuns to Copenhagen. The order of St. Clare, also referred to as the Clarisses, was originally established as a female counterpart to the Franciscans, who were renowned as grey friars in Copenhagen.
