Holmens Kirke

Holmens Kirke

• 3 minutes reading time

Holmens Kirke, Holmen Church, is beautifully situated by the canal, that lies between the church and Slotsholmen. The church, first consecrated in 1619 for seafarers, has since undergone numerous renovations. The original gable is older than the church itself, dating back to 1563, and it is this part of the church that faces the canal. Originally, it formed part of a smithy tower. However, in 1641, the church took on its current cruciform shape, and all wings were raised to the height of the original gable, and the remaining sections were decorated to match this. This is also the church where Queen Margrethe II was baptized in 1940 and married in 1967.

Shipbuilder’s Island

Before Holmen’s Church became a place of worship, it was part of a larger production area known as Bremerholmen. At that time, Bremerholmen was an island where, in the early 1500s, the first proper naval base or shipyard in Copenhagen was established.
