The square of Højbro Plads connects Slotsholmen and Christiansborg with Amagertorv, the heart of the inner city. After the great fire in 1795, the site of Højbro Plads was cleared, replacing two narrow streets along the flanks of the present-day square. On the west side flank was the street Højbrostræde, and along the east side was the street Store Færgestræde. Then, in 1795, Højbro Plads was laid out, and today, it reminds us of the extent to which Copenhagen’s current layout resulted from the great ravaging fires of 1728 and 1795.

The City Is Burning … Again

In 1794, Christiansborg Palace burned down, and the Royal family moved out, leaving behind nothing but a scorched ruin. The following year, the city burned again! This time, it didn’t only affect the Royal family but also numerous others.
