Gråbrødretorv

Gråbrødretorv

• 3 minutes reading time

Gråbrødretorv, “Greyfriars Square,” is a tranquil square located in the heart of Copenhagen. The square serves as an oasis amidst the bustling downtown of the city. Completely surrounded by restaurants, you can relax in the shade provided by the large plane tree in the centre. This tree has stood there since 1902, but a dire future awaits it, as it has begun to decay from the inside. So, please enjoy the shade while it lasts. Until 1866, the square was known as Ulfeldts Plads, or “Ulfeldt’s Square,” named after Denmark’s most infamous traitor, Corfitz Ulfeldt, whose mansion faced the square.

The Greyfriars

The Greyfriars were the first monastic order to be granted a monastery in Copenhagen. In 1238, they were granted the area around the current square. Actually, they were Franciscan friars, but their grey cowls earned them their nickname.
