Gammeltorv

• 3 minutes reading time

Gammeltorv, “Old Square,” is the city’s oldest square located in the heart of the oldest part of Copenhagen. Along the southern side of the square, where the pedestrian street Strøget now stretches, the city’s town hall was located from the end of the 15th century to 1795. Throughout Copenhagen’s history, Gammeltorv was a popular centre that hosted a variety of events, from jousting and trade fairs to executions and minstrel performances. Today, the square is surrounded by a diverse blend of architectural styles, with one of the most striking being the famous designer and architect Arne Jacobsen’s grey corner house featuring grey glazed clinkers on the square’s northern corner.

Water Supply and Royal Birthdays

In 1608, the town hall facing the square was rebuilt, and the magnificent Caritas Fountain in Renaissance style was placed in the middle of Gammeltorv. Before that, there had only been a well for the townspeople. The well’s water was supplied from Lake Emdrup in hollowed trunks joined together with lead sleeves.
