Gammel Strand

• 3 minutes reading time

Gammel Strand, or ‘Old Shore’, is a sunny little street located by the canal that separates the old town from the island of Slotsholmen. On Gammel Strand, you can sit at one of the many cafés and restaurants with outdoor seating and keep an eye on those in power on the other side of the canal. Originally, the beach extended further up, and it has acquired its current design through artificial landfill. Above the entrance of number 40, you can see how Tivoli Gardens’ first main entrance looked: a plaque hangs there, reminding us that this is the site where Georg Carstensen lived when he founded Tivoli Gardens in 1843.

Fresh Fish!

For over 100 years, Gammel Strand was the place where fresh fish were offered for sale. Since the 18th century, only women sold their fish here. The fish market on Gammel Strand slowly declined during the 20th century, with the last fish being sold by Doris in 2008.
