Christianshavn

• 3 minutes reading time

In 1618, a letter was issued by King Christian IV stating that the fortress of Christianshavn should be constructed to defend the king, the navy and the city’s citizens against attacks. Additionally, the city’s land area would expand, providing ample space for civilian housing. Christianshavn was inspired by Dutch Renaissance architecture and was thus characterized by symmetry in its layout. At that time, the square was situated in the middle of the island, and there were approximately 70 new building plots. Today, the island has expanded to the north, and more than 13,000 people reside here now.

Hey … Where Are the Residents?

Christianshavn was designed with a central square, and the king provided the drinking water supply. Additionally, a transverse canal was constructed, ensuring that both the upper and lower parts of the island had access to mooring space. The only thing missing was inhabitants.
