Copenhagen City Hall was inaugurated in 1905 as the city’s sixth city hall. For the construction of the city hall, the contract was awarded through an open competition, and the winner was the carpenter and architect Martin Nyrop with his city hall in Italian style inspired by Northern medieval architecture. The resulting city hall is built in the so-called Skønvirke style, a Danish counterpart to Art Nouveau. The tower stands 105 metres tall and was the tallest when it was erected. Inside the tower, Jens Olesen’s World Clock is displayed. It is the world’s most precise mechanical clock; hence, all Danes set their watches by it.

A Wealth of Detail

Two million Danish kroner were budgeted for the construction of the city hall when the foundation stone was laid in 1894. Eventually, the project exceeded the budget by an additional 5 million kroner. However, they didn’t skimp on ornamentation either.
